A Quick History of Bingo
The origins of the game of Bingo can be traced back to 1530 and the Italian lottery called Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia, which is still played to this day in Italy. The game spread across Europe, arriving in France in the late 1770s, where it was called Le Lotto and played in particular by the wealthy gentlemen of French society. In Germany the game was used from the 1880s to help children to learn Maths, Spelling and History.By 1929 the game was being played in the US, where it was called Beano. It was played in particular at country fairs, where the players would use beans to mark their cards as the dealer selected the numbered discs from a cigar box. When a player had completed their card they would shout Beano.
The popularity of Bingo spread across the US from here. A New York toy salesman named Edwin S. Lowe renamed the game as Bingo when players mistakenly called out Bingo instead of Beano when they completed the pattern on their cards. Bingo then became a means for raising church funds in the US, so that by 1934 an estimated 10,000 bingo games were being played each week.
Bingo is now hugely popular in the UK as well. Online, it can be played as both a single player Bingo game, where the size of the cash prize is dependent on how quickly the player completes their card. Multiplayer online Bingo is now fast becoming one of the most popular bingo formats too. These games replicate the excitement of the bingo hall, where you are competing against other players to be the first to complete the required pattern on your card. These games emphasise the fun aspects of bingo, with live chat rooms where you can talk to other bingo players whilst the game goes on.
