HOUSE! Bingo gran wins £100K
Cheers erupted at the Gala Bingo Club, in Westfield Road, Westwood, Peterborough, when the 71-year-old, who is a regular, beat 750,000 other people around the country who had their eyes down hoping to win the jackpot. The pensioner, from Werrington, who has not been named by Gala, was with her husband at the game, and she was in such a state of shock after she clinched her full house, that she had to be given a brandy.
It was a more than lucky night for the grandma because she normally goes to the bingo on a Sunday night, but she was so fed up with what was on the TV last Saturday she went to Gala instead.
Although she wanted to keep the win private, the pensioner, who looks after her 19-month-old great grandson while his mother works, and has two sons, a daughter and five grandchildren, did admit that she needed a second brandy when she got home to help her sleep.
She said: "I was in such a state of shock after they told me how much I had won. I just went numb. They gave me a brandy and then I had another when I got home. I tried to sleep, but my husband sat up and watched the Commonwealth Games all night. My husband rang everyone when we got home to tell them the good news".
When the grandma, who has been a regular for 10 years, won, her pals at the bingo raised the rafters with their cheers.
But she had a nervous 20-minute wait until the management confirmed she was the country's big winner of £100,000, plus a bonus of the regional prize of £3,183, and the club prize of £267.
The glad-to-be-bingo-crazy gran knows just what she is going to do with the money. She said: "All the family told us to enjoy ourselves with the money, so we shall. But first on the list is a new three-piece suite and carpets."
The win confirms a report last year that bingo-potty Peterborough is a lucky city – the seventh most fortunate in the UK.
It came after fans at Gala scooped jackpot prizes of £89,000, £160,000 and £70,000, making it a magnet for those wanting a bit of good luck to rub off on them.
